Modern Jazz
Modern Jazz is a form of dance known as the Jazz Dance. The name Jazz is used simply because of the ever-popular Jazz music that is heard over the radio in the early 1900's where this dance gained its popularity. Modern Jazz in the early years tied very closely to tap dancing, as tap dancing also uses jazz music. It however, evolved on broadway and musical theater into a new smooth, style taught today. Now, you can see many dancers dances to the Modern Jazz in MTVs and music videos.
The various styles of jazz dance have grown from the emphasis on individual style and improvisation. As seen in the hip-hop dancers of today, jazz dance emphasizes individual expression. Each teacher, dancer, and choreographer brings a unique style into the mix. Nowadays, you see this dance can be danced to any kind of music, either jazz, blues, rap or rock. It has evolved to the dance that we know today.
